Alchemy

Alchemy flourished in the 14th – 17th centuries alongside Renaissance Humanism and Neoplatonism. Blending various disciplines such as the arts and the sciences or hermeticism and mysticism, alchemists sought to revive the wisdom of the ancients and to unite contemplation with action.

Alchemy had both practical and symbolic aspects. Practically, alchemists experimented with various substances, searching for ways to transmute elements. Symbolically, it was a mystical pursuit in which the transmutation of base metals into gold is a metaphor for spiritual liberation.

Alchemy & Theatre

The three fundamental principles of alchemy (tria prima), namely mercury, sulphur, and salt, which the 16th-century physician and occultist Paracelsus associated with the soul, spirit, and body can be seen as corresponding to three schools of theatre:

1. The genius of insight and improvisation as found in figures such as Hermes or Harlequin.

2. The actor’s presence, charisma, and emotional authenticity.

3. The distillation and refinement of theatrical interpretation as found in conservatories.
